Summer used to be a rather peaceful time in the Mills household. Without the threat of being marked tardy at school, we could sleep in a little later... and then Megan and I would mosey on down to her gym, where I would drop her off for her daily training.
I would then have a luxurious FIVE kid-free hours to take care of business: to work, to blog, to run errands, etc. And when I picked her up, we would still have a good part of the afternoon to play.
I am still in mourning for that comfortable routine. July was bad enough, as tennis camp was only three hours a day, which barely gave me any time at all (because, let's face it - it takes me nearly an hour to wind myself UP to work mode). I cut a lot of corners in July, missed out on a lot of reading, and neglected this blog in favor of my paying job... and never did feel like I was catching up.
Well, tennis camp has ended and Megan doesn't have any activities set up for August... and she's driving me CRAZY.
It's not that I'm not enjoying spending time with my daughter. She's a good kid and is a lot of fun to be around. But she has a lot of nervous energy in that slender little body of hers, and she's not getting enough activity. She's jumpy, she's having trouble getting to sleep at night... and, I'm afraid, she's getting bored.
So I'm accepting every invitation for appropriate events that come my way. Monday, I dragged her to a private party at BLD Restaurant, where we sampled designer milkshakes created by the restaurant's chef, Mariah Swan.
Fortunately, she was not the only kid at the event -- and there was even another 13-year-old girl for her to hang with (thanks to Sweatpants Mom and her two daughters for being there, too!)
This event was sponsored by the folks behind the Got Milk? campaign, who prove time and again that it doesn't take expensive swag to get a mommy blogger's attention. We will drive across town for lattes and cappuccinos, too. The restaurant served nine different variations of blended milk and ice cream - and have posted some of the recipes on their website here.
Unfortunately, the mommy bloggers' favorite recipe is not on the site, but I was able to finagle it from one of the publicists. This one was NOT served to the kiddies:
Caramel Tequila Milkshake
Serves 2
1 pint vanilla ice cream
½ cup caramel sauce
½ cup milk
2 shots of tequila
To finish: whipped cram
Directions: Combine all ingredients in a blender and pulse until combined. Divide between 2 glasses and top with whipped cream.
Tomorrow, we are attending a Nintendo event at the La Brea Tar Pits, in honor of the company's newly released Fossil Fighters game for the DS. Thanks to countless school field trips, Megan has kind of OD'd on the tar pit experience, but I promised her we'd follow up with a shopping trip at the nearby Grove.
After that - I've got nothing... other than the knowledge that school doesn't start back up until SEPTEMBER 9 (!)
Heaven help us.
