Kodak's new EasyShare M530 is the first point-and-shoot camera I've received that prompted my teenage daughter's envy. Maybe it's because it's so cute: It's red (and comes in three other colors) and it's tiny (just the right size to slip into an evening bag).
I'm pretty sure she doesn't even know that the M530's photos are 12 megapixels, or that the camera's EasyShare button allows you to pre-tag and designate where you want your uploaded photos to go -- in one easy step. Or that the camera features new face-recognition technology that allows it to automatically tag the people you photograph most often.
I put the camera through its paces yesterday at the Streamy Awards. I don't have the patience to mess with camera settings (that's my husband's domain), so I kept it in "Smart Capture" mode... and I think it performed beautifully, as you can see from my Flickr stream here.
And the M530 becomes the ultimate Mother's Day gift when you pair it with Kodak's latest digital photo frame, the Pulse.
Digital frames have been around for so long that they're kind of ho-hum... but this one's different. It has built in wi-fi, so you can seamlessly transfer your photos to it -- but a lot of other frames have that function. What makes this one unique is that you can assign the frame its own email address, so you can send photos to it from any photo device anywhere - like from your phone. Not only that, but when you share that email address with your family and friends, they can simply email their photos to your frame, too.
NOW you see the power, don't you?
We set the frame up on Friday and notified my sister and her kids of the email address... Saturday morning, we discovered a bunch of new photos we'd never seen before.
I do have to tell you that the device is new and not entirely glitch-free. Ideally, new photos are supposed to show up on the frame within 15 minutes of sending them, and we've had a much longer lag time. In fact, we were on the phone with Kodak customer support, who told us that they were doing a server upgrade (for, I suppose, problems relating to these frame email addresses). And for some reason, photos I send from my computer are NOT showing up - but the ones I'm sending from my phone ARE.
These are buggy little things that I'm sure will be worked out. Overall, we're loving this device and I've been thinking it's perfect to buy for my own parents.
My contacts at Kodak told me that the Pulse frame is proving to be so popular that they're having trouble keeping it in stock. However, they have reserved one frame and one M530 EasyShare camera for a reader of this blog!
I'm going to select one entry at random for my Kodak giveaway, and I'm going to take my cue from the question we asked the nominees yesterday on the Streamys' red carpet. To enter, leave a comment at the bottom of this post, describing to me your favorite Kodak moment. (MAKE SURE I HAVE YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS so I can contact you if you win!)
You may enter more than once by tweeting the following:
